A reminder about that voice in your head

This ever happen to you?

You’re dreaming about an audacious goal, a much-needed New Year's resolution, a bold new business venture...and a lawyer-like voice in your head blurts out:

"OBJECTION!"

I call this voice my “Inner Attorney.”

I know. It's bonkers.

But I’ve talked to enough people to know it’s also common.

In fact, I’d be willing to bet your “Inner Attorney” is RIGHT THIS MOMENT poo-pooing some of your more ambitious goals for 2025.

Entertain any big thought, and there it is, louder by the moment.

“Objection! Objection! OBJECTION!

So, how about we do this? Counter the most common objections of our “Inner Attorney” with some other, saner voices:

1. OBJECTION! My client and I need more time to confer about this.

Please. Bruce Lee would Jeet Kune Do that negative notion straight into outer space! He'd counter with, “If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.”

2. OBJECTION! Suppose things don't go exactly as planned?

Seriously? Actress Marilu Henner would stare down that scare tactic and urge instead, “Don’t let perfectionism become an excuse for never getting started.”

3. OBJECTION! This will take my client WAY too long!

Oh, whatever! Better to listen to Earl Nightingale's voice. “Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.”

4. OBJECTION! Suppose my client attempts this...but then regrets it?

Comedian Lucille Ball offers far better counsel. “I’d rather regret the things I’ve done than regret the things I haven’t done.”

Look, can we agree that “Inner Attorney” objections like these should be OVERRULED?

Here's the reminder we all need: Making serious progress on your goals this year will require firing your “Inner Attorney” and listening to some wiser, braver voices.
